Servo Valves Give Smart Air, Oil, Vacuum Control 
    Electronically fired valves that control air, vacuum, or oil supply on a thermoforming unit normally have only two positions: open and closed. But the new Smart Valve from Lyle Industries Inc., Beaverton, Mich., is a servo valve that can be programmed for a continuous range of flow control from 0 to 100%. Microprocessor control of the valves permits saving valve parameters as part of the “recipe” for making a particular part. Lyle offers the Smart Valve as an option on its machines and also offers them for use on other units.

Cups Get Fast Lip Service 
    Roll lips on 500 to 5000 cups/min with the new LR-2000 lip roller from Brown Machine, Beaverton, Mich. The unit uses four curling screws powered by a single AC variable-speed drive. Screw distances can be adjusted for a different size cup (2 to 32 oz) in minutes using a micrometre-type adjustment. Brown says the new model is faster, more reliable, and easier to adjust than units with a single curling screw and helper roller.

INJECTION MOLDING TRAINING: Basic Molding Machine Operations

This is an introductory injection molding training course describing molding machine parts and operation, operator responsibilities, safe practices and identifying part defects. It is ideal for all operators, entry-level employees, temporary employees, and even job candidates. Also available in Spanish.

  • Lesson 1 – This plastics training lesson starts with an overview of the injection molding process, then covers basic material handling does and donts, machine part identification and standard operator responsibilities during the molding cycle. Tool Insert Degates In the Mold 
    A simple in-mold degating method for edge-gated parts has been developed by Cavity Balancing Systems (CBS) of Kitchener, Ont. The method relies on new Flush Trim Inserts, which are positioned near the gate to form lands encircling the gate region. When the parts are ejected, a nearby ejector pin causes a shearing action that breaks the part from its runner. Made from hardened tool steel, the low-cost inserts and the retaining pins that hold them fit into easily machined pockets and stepped holes. CBS estimates that the inserts will pay for themselves in reduced labor after 25,000 to 50,000 cycles.

New CAD Software Eases Mold Design & Inspection 
    A new suite of CAD/CAM tools for mold design and manufacture was shown at the recent K’98 show in Dusseldorf by Delcam of the U.K. (represented by Delcam International, Inc., Windsor, Ont.). Called Power Solution, the suite includes PowerShape 3D surface-modelling software, which automates injection mold design by generating plates, inserts, and hole layouts, as well as a bill of materials. “PowerInspect” software works with coordinate measuring machines to compare part dimensions with the original CAD model. “PowerMill” provides multi-axis 3D CAM capabilities.

Scotland’s engineering sector has suffered tremendously recently. They have not only seen a deep decline in output volumes and incoming export business but, the sector has also seen a huge fall in new orders. This has been put down to both the strong english pound and the current worries in the oil and gas industry. But, unfortunately that is not the only thing that the Scottish engineering sector has to worry about. A new survey was released by Scottish Engineering recently which also showed that the oil and gas industries workforce was taking a hit.
The survey which is released every three months showed that the low price of oil is starting to have an impact on those that work in the oil and gas industries. This includes those companies that produce equipment and components in the oil and gas sector too. Initially the oil crisis was just affecting oil companies directly, now it seems to be spreading to those that work alongside the oil companies too.

The Chief Executive of Scottish Engineering Bryan Buchan said: “This is a significant issue for many of our member companies, who are not directly involved in extraction on the UKCS (UK Continental Shelf), but who over the years have developed expertise in manufacture of components and equipment for the major players who are now radically curtailing their activities.”
He continued by sharing his opinion that the price of oil will stay low for a while. This opinion is currently widely expressed by a number of senior executives in the oil and gas industry.

In fact, only twenty three per cent of engineering organisations based in Scotland experienced an increase in orders over the last three month period. A whopping forty four per cent experienced a fall in orders and the remaining stayed the same.
The organisation behind the surveys are expecting another fall in orders over the next survey in three months. But, they do expect the pace of the decline to slow slightly.

The report showed that only twenty six per cent of engineering companies based in Scotland increased their staffing levels. Unfortunately twenty seven per cent reduced their employee levels and the rest kept the same number of staff.
Worryingly for engineers in the oil and gas industry, this is actually the third time in a row in which the survey has noted a fall in employee numbers. But, it is not all doom and gloom, these declines have been modest.
